1. Petronas Towers & KLCC Park
No trip to KL is complete without a visit to the iconic Petronas Towers. This skyscraper is the most well known landmark in Malaysia and its architecture does not disappoint.
There’s a lot to do in the area. Like taking dozens of selfies in front of the tower. There’s a large shopping mall inside the towers and on the other side of the towers there’s a fountain and park to explore. The park is good for walking with a beautiful pond, a playground, and a small water park for kids.
Inside the towers, you can also go up to the observation deck. First stop is the Skybridge that connects the two towers. Final stop is the observation deck on the 86th floor. The views are spectacular at both levels.
Be sure to see the towers at night as well. I dare say they even more beautiful at night and the fountain in the back of the towers has a light and water show choreographed to music that happens every half hour. The towers, the mall, the observation deck, and the KLCC park are really a fun way to spend a day in Kuala Lumpur. Be sure to check them out.
3. Malaysia Tourism Center
Not far from the Petronas Towers, is the Malaysia Tourism Center which has a really nice cultural show in the afternoons. The show is free and is a great way to spend an hour of your afternoon. Malaysia is a multicultural nation so it was nice to see a variety of dances from the different Malay ethnicities. You can even get up and try the dances for yourself at the end. It was really a lot of fun!
4. Merdeka Square
Merdeka Square or Independence Square is another must in Kuala Lumpur. This is where they celebrate Malay Independence day every year. There’s so much beautiful architecture in this area including the intricate Sultan Abdul Samad and two big fountains. Take some time to see it for yourself.
5. Jamek Mosque
A short walk away from Independence Square is Masjid Jamek, which is a mosque situated at the crossings of two rivers. It’s nice to see it’s Moorish architecture and the cool Kuala Lumpur sign in front of the Mosque.
6. Central Market
A short walk away from the mosque is Central Market. This is a great place to shop and pick up a souvenir or two. There are two levels and a wide selection to choose from.

Jalan Alor is a great place to pick up dinner, try delicious street food, and see amazing murals that cover entire alleyways. Sit at any one of the bountiful restaurants and enjoy watching the world pass you by as you enjoy your meal.
8. Istana Negara
We also enjoyed going to the King’s Palace Istana Negara. The palace is practically brand new, built in 2011, and we got to see the comings and goings of the king’s car and the changing of the guard.
9. Batu Caves
About 40 minutes outside of Kuala Lumpur are the Batu Caves. This colorful Hindu temple is joy to behold with hundreds of rainbow colored stairs, monkeys, and an amazing gold statue of Lord Murugan. Enjoy the views of the hills from the outside and then climb to the top to experience the caves for yourself.
