Kanchanaburi province has some of the most impressive waterfalls in Thailand. We’re talking about 7 levels of waterfalls that you will enjoy swimming in and staring at for hours. The trails in these national parks are so nice that they really will transport you to another world. So in this blog, we’ll explore two must-see Kanchanaburi waterfalls, how to get there, and tips on an additional excursion that will enhance your experience even more!
Getting to Kanchanaburi’s Waterfalls
Kanchanaburi is a province a few hours west of Bangkok that is known for its history, temples, and waterfalls.
We highly recommend taking the train to get there. The train costs only ฿100 baht which is about $3.35 USD. It’s best to take the train from Thonburi Station in Bangkok. The journey takes 2.5-3 hours, and there are usually trains leaving from Bangkok twice daily, one early in the morning around 7 am, and one in the afternoon around 1 pm.
Once you get to Kanchanaburi City, we recommend renting a car, so you can swim and enjoy the falls freely without keeping track of a bus schedule. We used Kanchanaburi Rental Cars and had a good experience. Prices started at around 1000 Baht per day or about $30 USD and made our travels so much easier.
Alternatively, there is a bus that goes to Erawan Falls from Kanchanaburi City if you prefer to use public transport. There is no public transportation to Huay MaeKhamin which is a waterfall park that really should not be missed if you are in the province. It is a true jaw-dropper!
Erawan Falls National Park
Our first recommended Kanchanaburi waterfall park is Erawan Falls. It is about an hour’s drive outside of the city of Kanchanaburi, and it’s definitely worth the drive. This national park has 7 levels of waterfalls and each fall is more amazing than the next.
You will not believe the quantity and the quality of the falls. They are breathtaking to behold and you can even swim in the first 3 levels of the falls. Please be aware that the fish will nibble on you, giving you free exfoliation while you swim. Their nibbles are harmless, but they tinkle like crazy!
If you want to see the beauty of these falls for yourself, check out the video below. These views do not disappoint!
This park has a lot of amenities like restaurants, plenty of restrooms to change in, and life jackets which are required if you want to get in the water. The park is also clearly labeled and easy to navigate.
We recommend spending at least 3 hours in this park so you have plenty of time to explore each waterfall and swim in one or two of them. Really, it would be easy to spend an entire day at Erawan Falls alone, but I promise you definitely want to see Huay Maekamin as well. It’s a true highlight!
Hours: Open daily, 8am-4:30pm
Cost: 300 Baht for foreigners or $9.99 USD
Huay Maekamin Waterfall National Park
Huay Maekhamin is two hours away for Kanchanaburi City and one hour north of Erawan Falls. The waterfalls at Huay Maekhamin are truly spectacular. They are even bigger and more powerful than the ones at Erawan. This is why you really should make the effort to go!
Just a few feet from the parking lot is one of the most impressive waterfall, I’ve ever seen. Surrounded by lush greenery and with so many different drops and levels, you could easily stare at this waterfall all day.
Like Erawan Falls, Huay Maekamin also has 7 levels of waterfalls. You can wander around the flat, level trails and experience beautiful waterfall after beautiful waterfall.
The park also offers great views of the surrounding mountain hills and the lake.
This park does have fewer amenities such as restaurants, so it is best to eat before coming or to bring a picnic with you. You definitely won’t regret coming.
Hours: Open daily, 8am-5pm
Cost: 300 Baht for foreigners or $9.99 USD
Phra That Cave
Phra That Cave is a large 200-meter cave that has beautifully intricate stalagmites and stalactites worth exploring. The cave also has several lovely Buddha altars perfect for saying a prayer and paying your respects.
This cave is only 8 kilometers from Erawan Falls and will be a very nice addition to your itinerary if you have time.
Hours: Open daily, 8am-3pm
Cost: none
Our Final Thoughts on Kanchanaburi Waterfalls
