Thailand Travels Essentials List

Comfortable dress in Thailand is essential. Light and airy clothing is the way to go. When packing for a trip to Thailand it is important to pack the essentials. Most other things you will easily be able to find upon your arrival so do not worry too much about those. Having swimwear is also essential. For men shorts and t-shirts are easy to acquire.  For ladies shorts, skirts, tank tops and lightweight blouses are best. In fact, if you want to travel lighter you can purchase these clothes once you arrive. They are fairly inexpensive in Thailand.

Temple Attire for Ladies

It is important for ladies to take note if you are planning on visiting some of the amazing temples in Thailand, there are specific dress codes for temples. Ladies should wear tops that cover their shoulders and the midriff. Ladies should wear pants or skirts that cover the knees.  If you arrive at a temple and are not properly dressed many of the temples will provide you with a sarong.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen in Thailand is a must. I recommend that people bring their own because sunscreen in Thailand is more expensive. Also, sunscreen in Thailand has skin whitening properties in it’s solution. Many of the cosmetics, including sunscreen, have whitening properties.  Thai people like to bleach their skin. If this is something you would like to avoid I would suggest you pick up a bottle before you arrive.

Sandals

One black sandal is displayed here.

When visiting Thailand you will find that having quality sandals is very important. There’s a lot of walking in Thailand when sightseeing. A lot of ladies like to wear flat sandals but I recommend a comfortable sandal with a sole much like a tennis shoe. There are a lot of stairs in Thailand and after a while you will feel uncomfortable. This can definitively take away from the experience.

Tennis Shoes

Tennis shoes in Thailand are essential if you will be sightseeing. I almost made the mistake of buying a shoe because of the way it looked and not the way it feel when I wore them. That would have been a costly mistake. Men’s tennis shoes are very expensive. I highly recommend that you purchase one pair of excellent shoes.  Also, there’s a difference between a walking tennis shoe and a running tennis shoe. It’s important that you choose a shoe that you can walk in all day. Comfort is extremely important. Otherwise you will want to cut your day short because of the discomfort you may feel.

Hat

Hats in Thailand are essential because they are both stylish and they protect us from the afternoon heat.  The heat in Thailand can take a lot out of you.  Before living here I had no idea how intense the sun’s rays were during the day. Sometimes during the middle of the day the heat can be unbearable. A friend says the summer is called “Hoodie Season.” This means, many Thai people wear hoodies to protect themselves from the sun. A good hat can provide a bit of relief from the sun by shading the face. Shades help as well.

Surge Protector and 220v Convertor

Thailand commonly use 220 volts and their outlets. in the United States we use a hundred and twenty volts in our outlets. It is important to have some type of converter for your laptops and mobile devices. I also recommend using a surge protector. If there is an event which occurs and the lights or power go out when it comes back on there are times when the voltage surge can damage your computer or mobile devices.  This can be a very expensive endeavor. As we learned by accident. My wife’s laptop was destroyed by this. Please learn from our mistake. Purchasing a new laptop was costly.

Sim Cards

When you arrive to Thailand I highly recommend that you purchase a SIM card.  SIM cards here in Thailand are very reliable. You can purchase them with unlimited data. I was skeptical at first about using SIM cards.  However, since using them I found them to be extremely reliable, easy to use, and probably one of the best and safest ways to have data for my mobile device. I use to use a much more expensive service that basically performed the same service. I did not realize I was wasting money.

Medicine- IB Profen

A bottle of medication or vitamins is open on a table. Other pills are on the table as well.

I find the Thailand have most medicines. However, there are specific medicines for individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure and you will want to bring those medications with you. People here who have headaches tend to use Tylenol as it is readily available. Ibuprofen is more challenging to find. However, local stores or pharmacies have licensed pharmacist that can help you find most medications.

Umbrella

A girl with a colorful umbrella is wearing white pants, white tank top, and white shades. She is standing on a beach.

Umbrellas are very useful. In the United States I only used an umbrella for when it was raining. In Thailand it is common for Thai people to use umbrellas on the beach. They also use umbrellas when they are shopping or when they are sightseeing at temples. The umbrella is used to shade themselves from the intense rays of the Sun. Thai people have learned the importance of protecting their skin from the harsh sun rays. You will notice that I have mentioned this issue several time. It is because it’s hot here.

Jacket

When coming to Thailand most people would not think that they would need a jacket. because of the climate it’s very warm most of the year especially down south. However, if you are traveling up north in the Chiang Mai area or the Chiang Rai area a jacket can be essential. It becomes much colder at night than you would imagine. Also, if you are riding a motor scooter at night it could also feel cool and you will need a jacket then also. In the summer months, known as High Season, Thai people wear jackets In the Heat of the day. This is to protect themselves from the Sun. The heat can be intense.

Blue Jeans

People wear jeans in Thailand, but they are not essential. Many people do not wear jeans at all. In America we are accustomed to wearing jeans everywhere. However, in Thailand most natives do not wear jeans. If so, they typically wear a loose-fitting jeans during the day. Sometimes in the evening you may see ladies wearing tight-fitting or stylish jeans.

Evening Attire

I typically recommend that everyone have something for evening wear. There are occasions when you might want to attend an elegant dining experience. You might enjoy an upscale dining experience, a rooftop bar, or a live band performance which might require nice dress. There are places that do not allow beach wear such as shorts or t-shirts. Some resorts, restaurants and venues frown upon casual wear. As a rule of thumb I prefer to be prepared for any occasion.

International Driving License

If you have a driver’s license in your home country it is recommended that you travel with an International Driver’s License while traveling abroad. so if you desire to rent a motor scooter you will have a driver’s license that you can use while in Thailand. Although some people will recommend not having an International Driver’s License you will find it very useful if you are pulled over by the police.

Passport and Visas

We all know Passports and Visas are very important. They are even more important during covid-19 times.  It is important to know as much as you possibly can about the type of Visa you have and it’s expiration. Immigration in Thailand is very specific about the rules.  You want to make sure that you know what those rules are and that you’re always following them.

Skin Moisturizer

Skin care is very important in general. However, when in Thailand it’s especially important. skin moisturizers are essential. There are times when you’re in Thailand and you will feel that your skin is very dry. There are times when you will feel like your skin is being sunburned. After swimming on a beach, or going on an island hopping tour, or swimming, you will want to moisturize your skin right away.

Credit Card Without International Fees

In the 21st century everyone accepts credit cards. If you have it available to you I would recommend that you bring a credit card that does not charge international fees. This is an opportunity for you to save as much money. By using your credit card at many locations while you’re traveling international credit card fees quickly can add up to a substantial amount.

Toiletries for Ladies

I recommend that women bring the toiletries that they’re accustomed to using. However, Thailand stores have adequate toiletries that will match most brands.
