How to Get From Porto to Braga
Getting to Braga from Porto is a breeze! Just hop on the train at Sao Bento Station in Porto for just an hour-long ride through picturesque landscapes. The best part is that this train ride is super affordable, costing only €7 Euros for a roundtrip during our adventure.
The historic city center is walkable from the train station, however, I suggest that as soon as you arrive you take the bus up to the beautiful hilltop churches. Just outside of the train station, you will find a convenient bus stop where you can catch local bus #2 to reach Bom Jesus do Monte. Then, from Bom Jesus do Monte, you can use bus #88 to reach the Sanctuary of Our Lady Sameiro and then return to the historic city center. Trust us, it’s so easy to navigate the bus with Google Maps. It’s very convenient and well laid out.
Alternatively, if you prefer a more guided experience, you can check out the various Braga tour options available from Porto. The choice is yours, and each promises an unforgettable journey!
Is Braga Portugal Walkable?
While you’ll need the bus to reach some of Braga’s popular attractions like the famous Bom Jesus do Monte and The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro, fear not! The city center is small, compact, and easily walkable. Stroll around the charming streets and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere!
The 10 Best Things to Do in Braga
From the hilltop churches to the bustling city center, Braga has a variety of interesting things to see and do. Here are 10 of the best things to do in Braga if you are on a short day trip to the city.
1. Bom Jesus do Monte
The absolutely must-see when you come to Braga is Bom Jesus do Monte, which is a hilltop church with one of the most incredible staircases that we’ve ever seen. It’s a 577-step journey to the top, but you will hardly notice the climb because you will be well entertained with different mausoleums detailing the life of Jesus and dozens of gorgeous fountains that bring the serene sound of running water to the place.
As you climb higher, you will see majestic sculptures and perfectly manicured gardens that are absolutely lovely to see. The church itself was nice as well, but honestly, the staircase is the most exciting part. I can see why this church was a popular pilgrimage site back in the day. In the past, Christian worshippers would climb all 577 steps on their hands and knees. Luckily, climbing on your hands and knees is not a requirement to see this lovely place today.
However, if climbing the 577 steps is too tough for you physically, you can take the funicular up which happens to be the oldest funicular in Portugal. Built in 1882, you will be riding in a piece of history. Regardless of rather you go up by foot or by funicular, you are sure to have an incredible experience at Bom Jesus do Monte.
2. Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro
Sitting on the top of Sameiro Hill, The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro has one of the best views in Braga. But not only is this a lovely viewpoint, the grounds of the church have beautiful gardens, and sculptures that are charming to see. You will love wandering around the grounds as there are so many great photo opportunities in this spectacular courtyard.
3. Theatro Circo
After exploring the hilltop sanctuaries, it’s time to move down to the historic city center. First, take a stroll down the lovely Avenue da Liberdade which is a bustling main thoroughfare in the historic city center. Down this flower-lined pedestrian street, you will see the lovely Circo Theatre.
Built in 1907, this theatre is beautiful both on the inside and outside. To see the inside you can either see a show or tak a guided tour of the facility, so check their current schedule here.
4. Republic Square Garden (Jardim Praca da Republica)
This square is so picturesque with its fountain, arcades, and churches. It’s pleasant to walk around here and people-watch. There are also loads of cafes and restaurants to choose from if you would like to sit a spell and take in all of the beautiful views.
5. Braga Tower
This tower is all that remains of Braga Castle, a castle that used to encircle the entire city of Braga in the 2nd century A.D. They started to dismantle the castle in 1858 as the city started to grow and change. This tower is the 4-story keep which was the strongest part of the castle, meaning that people would take refuge in this tower if the castle was under attack.
It’s an intriguing piece of history right in the middle of Braga and definitely worth a stop while you are in the historic city center.
6. Holy Cross Church (Igreja de Sta. Cruz)
This 18th-century church is on a beautiful square that is worth seeing. Plus, it’s worth going inside as well to see the intricate Baroque styles covered in gold leaf. It’s so sparkly that it might blind you, but that is what makes it so lovely to see.
7. Palácio do Raio
This gorgeous blue-tiled building was built in the 1750s and was the home of a wealthy merchant and member of the Knights Templar. If you are intrigued by the stunning Baroque style, you can pay to go instead to see this great house’s art and interesting architectural details.
8. Braga Cathedral
Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, this church is a mix of styles including Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance. You can appreciate the structure just from the outside or go inside to see its collection of relics.
9.Jardim de Santa Barbara
This free garden is absolutely lovely with a variety of colorful flowers and a great view of the Archbishops Palace Garden as well. The stunning arches of the Archbishop’s Palace add an almost regal feel to the garden although they are two separate attractions.
This area also has lots of shops and cafes where you can get a bite or a drink while you enjoy the view.
10. The New Gate Arch (Arco da Porta Nova)
This lovely arch built in 1512 was the entrance to the city of Braga. The arch has two faces. The outer face has a Baroque style and highlights weapons of faith while the inner side has a neoclassical style with the Virgin Mary watching over the city.
