When traveling for a year you make your own schedule
With great freedom comes great responsibility. When traveling for a year you make your own schedule. It’s more difficult than it seems. Many people struggle to manage their own time. When faced with that reality a lot of time is wasted. When traveling for a year you should consider having a downtime. You should outline each day and what you hope to accomplish in it. You should set realistic goals just as you would on a job. Time is valuable. You must allocate your best work during the hours you have during the day. So before taking that long trip, consider how you will spend your time while you’re traveling. traveling is a lot of fun but it’s also like a full-time job. With this, you also need to take into consideration that you should turn it off. When you work a job we don’t work 24/7. You typically have evenings and weekends off work. Having a calendar will also allow you to have evenings and weekends for free time.
When traveling for a year you make your own budget
First of all, when traveling for a year you must budget. The idea of having a budget while you travel may shock most people. Budgeting is crucial. You should have an expressed amount of money that we spend each month. Going over our budget is not an option. This may be staying in less expensive hotels or condos. This may be renting a motor scooter versus renting a car or using the local transportation. Some cities are more expensive than others. So this may play into decisions that must be made while traveling. Choosing to stay in the wrong City could make or break your budget.
When traveling for a year you should exercise
Secondly, when traveling for a year you should exercise. Staying healthy while you travel is a part of the experience. If you choose not to exercise you may feel a loss of energy. When traveling the world for a year there is a lot of sightseeing. Sightseeing may require stair climbing. Most temples around the world do not have elevators. Some of the greatest views that you will see in the world require stair climbing. Keeping yourself in good shape also means keeping good energy. When traveling for a year you will encounter many different types of people. Interactions with people take energy. Exercise can also keep your energy balanced. Yoga, Tai Chi, running, walking, weightlifting, Muay Thai, bicycling, HIIT, and swimming are all good for the body.
When traveling for a year learn from the world around you
Third, when traveling for a year it gives you a good opportunity to learn from the world around you. In the school of life, there are lessons to be learned. You will make mistakes. Maybe your flight will be canceled and you will miss an appointment. Maybe you scheduled an online meeting and the internet was not working properly. Maybe you missed a plane because you were stuck in heavy traffic. Maybe you went over the budget for the month. Things like this can and will happen at times. What is important is how you respond. Do you get angry? Do you get frustrated? Learning from the world around you teaches you how to not respond in anger. As with most things frustrating circumstances will pass but will you have learned your lesson? Some things will be beyond your control. Go with the flow.
When traveling for a year grow and change
Next, when traveling for a year be willing to grow and change. If you travel for a year you will learn a lot about yourself. Not all that you learned will be good. Some situations will test your limits. Some things you simply will not understand. That’s okay. Keep in mind this is an experience that few people will ever have. So be willing to see the world differently and what you formally imagined. You were told things about the world that were untrue. Every Nation has its own interpretation of history. Being able to experience the world for yourself will give you the opportunity to make your own decisions regarding the world. To see things differently then how you were told it’s not a bad thing. This will give you an opportunity to grow and change. You will meet beautiful people and you will travel to many beautiful places.
When traveling for a year know who you are
Also, when you travel for a year know who you are and who you want to be. In my travels, I have met many people. I have met people traveling a journey of self-discovery. They asked themselves, who am I? What do I want to be? How can I live my best life? They do not leave this question for the government, or their families to answer. This is a question which can only be answered by oneself. When you travel for a year you start to realize that you are an important part of the world. We all have gifts and talents to contribute to the world. It is not by accident or coincidence that you are in the world. Some people call it dharma, purpose, or a mission. Whatever it’s called you have an opportunity to discover it for yourself. You have an opportunity to live it.
When traveling for a year observe beauty and pain
Furthermore, when you travel for a year you will observe both beauty and pain. You will see how people live. You will see how people are treated. You will understand and comprehend the complexities like you never have before. You will find that many live their lives differently and yet they are still the same. During Covid-19 times, we all take note that the world and the environment are changing. Although people are suffering economically, and socially, the environment is thriving. It appears that the sea creatures of the oceans and the seas are thriving. Covid-19 is raging in Nations around the world killing hundreds of thousands of people. I’m traveling during this time. This is what I observe. When you travel you will observe things differently.
When traveling for a year explore, go outside yourself, your thinking
When traveling for a year feel free to explore the world. Go outside of yourself and try some different things. You should consider all the world has to offer you. You may learn about new places and new cultures you’ve never experienced. You may experience festivals, customs, and rituals. You might taste different foods and find that you love them. These things do not negate your culture in your experience. These experiences can add to and enhance who you are. Open your mind to the possibility of different lifestyles. Not everything that you learned in your life thus far was right, and not everything you learned in your life thus far was wrong. Embrace the opportunity in continued learning. Learn how to appreciate the diversity and the differences among people.
When you travel for a year evolve
Finally, in your year of travel evolve. Allow yourself to be transformed. If you do you will find the world that you come from is different when you return. Not only have you changed, but the place that you call home will have changed as well. This is the nature of things. This is to be expected. Travel can be the greatest education. We launched our travel just before Covid-19 hit. We had to make a lot of changes post Covid-19. We had to learn and adapt so we could keep going and because of this, we have both had the best experience of our lives. Travel can be the greatest education. We learn by experiencing things rather than simply reading about things. This is a more practical way of learning about the world. We can learn a great deal this way. Be careful to not be limited by your own mind and beliefs. The world cannot be encompassed by one simple view or philosophy. The world entertains many philosophies and belief systems. It has for generations. The world is shaped by many constructs and will allow you to choose your own. In many cases, we see and experience what we want to see and experience in life. How do I deal with this? I leave the answer blank. I leave the boxes unchecked. I want the world to show me everything and allow me to choose my own direction in life. I think this is the wisest choice for me. Go on your journey and choose the wisest path for you. When you do travel the world share what you learn with others.

What to Bring?
When traveling for you a year and not a two week vacation you will want to pack thinking longterm. Although I cannot very well tell you everything you want to carry with you I can suggest a few things that will be helpful. See our Blog on packing for more details.
You will want to bring a fantastic luggage set. You do not want the cheap luggage set that will need to be replaced every few months. You do want luggage that is easy to recognize in airport baggage claim. You will want great packing cubes to keep everything in your bag organized. Next, I suggest noise-canceling headphones for downtime. Even though they are a bit more expensive keep in mind they are for a reason. When you are on a plane with a screaming toddler sitting behind you then you will thank me for this suggestion. Bose 35 II are excellent headphones. You will enjoy movies with them as well. Quality Sunscreen and Umbrellas are always a plus. Also, it is nothing like moving through the security lines faster in the airport because you have sandals on that are easy to take off. You will want quality sandals for sightseeing as well. Do yourself a favor and get great quality a pair of sandals that will last.
