Curaçao is one of our favorite islands in the Caribbean because this island greets you with rainbow-colored buildings, massive murals, and water so blue it looks filtered in real life. Whether you’re strolling through pastel streets in the city, sipping a cocktail with your toes in the sand, or hanging out in laid-back local spots, Curaçao has a neighborhood that just fits.
We spent an entire month soaking up island life in here and explored every major tourist area along the way. So in this guide, we’re breaking down exactly where to stay in Curaçao—from the historic charm of Willemstad, to the beach-club vibes of Mambo Beach, and the jaw-dropping beaches of Westpunt. By the end, you’ll know which area matches your travel style and which one will make your Curaçao trip unforgettable.
What to Consider When Booking Your Stay in Curaçao
Before you hit that “Book Now” button, keep these key points in mind:
🏖️ City Access vs. Beach Access

Curaçao is a unique Caribbean island because the best place to stay, Downtown Willemstad, does not have easy access to beautiful beaches. So, in Curaçao, you really have to prioritze do you want a beach-focused vacation or do you want to focus on having access to restaurants, nightlife, and beautiful historic architecture.
For us, downtown Willemstad is by far the best choice, because it helps you to really feel the vibe of the island and its people. However, everyone is different, so we’ll also include some great beach access options as well.
🚗 Transportation

Another big concern in Curaçao is transportation. Although Curaçao has an expansive bus system, it is not the most efficient way to see the island due to long wait times, a steep learning curve, and 2-3 hour wait times at more remote beaches. This is why we highly recommend renting a car in Curacao, so you will have the ultimate freedom to beach hop freely. Car rentals start at $41 USD per day here, and honestly, driving yourself can be the most affordable way to get you and your crew to all of Curacao’s beautiful attractions.
However, if you prefer not to rent a car, you can choose to stay in Willemstad and use tours and taxis to beach hop and see more of the island. I highly recommend downloading the taxi app 24-7 Taxi Curacao in order to easily order a taxi on demand. You can also use the tours below to beach hop and see more of the island.
Where Not to Stay in Curaçao (and Why)
Curaçao is a wonderful island overall, and very safe. However, like any destination, some areas just aren’t ideal for tourists, especially if it’s your first time. Here’s a friendly heads-up on places you may want to avoid—or at least think twice about—when choosing where to stay.
❌ Remote Inland Neighborhoods (Without a Car)
Curaçao is not very walkable, and public transportation can be slow and limited. Staying in inland residential areas far from beaches or Willemstad—especially if you don’t plan to rent a car—can make getting around frustrating.
🚗 Why to avoid:
- Limited dining and grocery options
- Long drives to beaches and attractions
- Taxis can be expensive and hard to find
❌ Industrial or Port Areas Near the Refinery
Some parts of Curaçao near the oil refinery are very industrial and not tourist-friendly. These areas lack charm, beaches, and amenities that travelers usually want on a Caribbean vacation.
⚠️ Why to avoid:
- Less scenic
- Not designed for tourism
- Can feel noisy or gritty compared to other parts of the island
👉 These areas are fine to pass through, but not ideal for staying.
Where to Stay in Curacao – Downtown, Willemstad: The Heart of Curaçao

Willemstad — the island’s capital — is truly picture-book Caribbean. Colorful Dutch colonial buildings line the streets, and the famous Queen Emma Bridge floats across St. Anna Bay like a postcard come to life. Downtown Willemstad is by far the best place to stay in Curacao because it’s centrally located, full of restaurants, colorful murals, museums, and has lively nightlife.
Willemstad has 3 downtown neighborhoods worth staying in, including Punda, Otrobanda, and Pietermaai. Finding a hotel in any of these three neighborhoods will put you within walking distance of all the action.

🌊 Westpunt: For the Nature & Beach Lovers

If dreamy beaches and wild nature are at the top of your Curaçao wish list, then Westpunt is calling your name. This part of the island is packed with some of the best beaches in Curaçao—think electric-blue water, incredible snorkeling right off the shore, and fantastic scuba diving. On top of that, you’re perfectly positioned near Shete Boka National Park and Christoffel National Park, where rugged coastlines, dramatic views, and epic hikes steal the show.
That said, Westpunt is definitely a bring-your-own-adventure kind of place. You’ll need a rental car to fully enjoy the area, and planning ahead is key. Restaurants are limited (and tend to close early), nightlife is basically nonexistent, and there are no grocery stores nearby—so if you plan to cook, you’ll want to stock up in Willemstad before heading out. While evenings here are very quiet, that’s exactly the appeal. If you love peaceful nights, starry skies, and waking up surrounded by nature, Westpunt is the ultimate spot to unplug and slow way down.
