10 Beautiful Sights in Kranj and Skofja Loka

Kranj and Skofja Loka are two small towns that left a big impact on us while we were in Slovenia. Although these towns may be small in size, they have a lot of charm and beautiful sights to enjoy.

We visited Kranj and Skofja Loka on our way from the capital of Ljubljana to Bled, and we were so glad that we did! It expanded our knowledge and experience in Slovenia and made us love the country even more.

How to Get to Kranj and Skofja Loka

In order to see Kranj and Skofja Loka in one day, it is best to rent a car. This way you have to freedom to travel on your own schedule. Kranj is just 25 km (15 miles) north from Ljubljana, Slovenia, so it should only take 30 minutes to arrive by car. You can find affordable Slovenia car rentals here!

Buses are also available at Ljubljana Central Bus Station, but taking the bus may require you to stay overnight to see everything on this list. Having your own vehicle makes it much easier to see everything in one day.

10 Things to Do in Kranj and Skofja Loka

When we did this day trip, we started with Kranj and then finished in Skofja Loka. Try to start as early in the morning as possible to maximize your day and have enough time in each town

1. Brdo Castle

For your first stop, take a walk through the charming castle grounds of Brdo Castle. This castle was once the home of a Count and Countess, and then the home of the former President of Yugoslavia. Today, Brdo Castle has transformed into a place for formal events and has a conference center and a hotel on the property.

Although the castle itself is lovely to see, the best part of going to Brdo Castle is wandering through the lovely grounds. The garden, the forest area, and the lake were lovely to see, and with an entrance of €5 euros per person, it’s also very affordable.

2. The Plecnik Arcade

Next drive to Old Town Kranj to explore Kranj’s city center. You can start your time in Kranj by climbing the beautiful stairs at The Plecnik Arcade. This is the entrance of Kranj city and has an interesting fountain and archways. This arcade was designed by Joze Plecnik, an internationally acclaimed architect who added several beautiful accents like this one to Kranj.

3. The St. Sebastian Church

The St. Sebastian Church is a single nave Gothic church that was built in 1428. Today the church is used by the Serbian Orthodox community. This is a church that was dedicated to saints after a promise was made by the citizens if they were spared from the plaque during that time. 

4. Kranj Cathedral

Kranj Cathedral, also known as St. Marjeta’s Church was built in the 9-10th century. It is still in use today. It is located right in the center of Old Town Kranj and is a great place to enjoy the charming town square and to see the daily life of the city.

5. Kokra River Canyon

Just footsteps away from Kranj Cathedral is Kokra River Canyon. Simply go to the river bridge, take the stairs down, and you are immediatedly transported out of the city into a refreshing natural landscape. Here, you will find local wildflowers as they grow effortlessly in this area and will be soothed by the sounds of nature, especially the sound the river. 

6. Grad Khislstein

Grad Khislstein also known as Khislstien Castle is a captivating landmark in Kranj. This medieval fortress dates back to the 13th century and now houses the Gorenjska Museum with a variety of cultural events, exhibitions, and edcuational programs. It’s lovely to just view from the outside or to go inside to learn more about the history of Kranj.

7. Majdicev Log

Our favorite view in Kranj was at Majdicev Log which has pictureque houses by the Sava River. Take a leisurely stroll here and enjoy the charming farmhouses in a postcard-perfect setting. It’s a peaceful retreat after your tour of Kranj Old Town.

Skofja Loka

Once you are finished in Kranj, it’s time to head to Skofja Loka, a picturesque town with rolling hills and a charming waterfall. The town had a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and we were able to find the best viewpoint in the city thanks to the kind locals.

8. Gostilna Raj (Paradise Bar)

One of the most picturesque spots in Skofja Loka is at Gostilna Raj. Here, you will have a great view of charming cottages alongside the river bank, and can hear the soothing sounds of the stunning waterfall as well. We recommend getting a drink here and exploring the river front.

9. St. Cross Church

Located at the top of a hill, St. Cross Church has spectacular views. Although the hill is pretty steep, it will only take you a few minutes to reach the top. We were fortunate enough to see a herd of sheep on our way up the hill.

We ventured up this hill just before sunset which was the perfect time. From here, you will have an enchanting view of the castle on the hill and the entire town of Skofja Loka.

10. Skofja Loka Castle

If you have any time left, then you can see the grandeur of Sofia Loka Castle. Unfortunately, we did not get to go inside as the castle is closed on Mondays, but this place is beautiful to behold from the outside.

Are Kranj and Skofja Loka worth visiting?

This depends on how much time you have. If you are short on time, then it is okay to skip Kranj and Skofja Loka. However, if you have time, they are definitely worth visiting as we found these towns charming and incredibly beautiful.
