The Best Way to See Gozo and Comino in One Day – A Malta Day Trip

Malta is an enchanting island nation that is made up of 3 inhabited islands, the Malta mainland, Gozo Island, and Comino Island which is famous for its stunning Blue Lagoon.  Most travelers will spend the majority of their time on the Malta mainland.  However, if you are curious about exploring the other two islands, you might be wondering…Is it possible to see Gozo and Comino in one day?  Well, in this article, we’re going to review our experience trying to do just that!

We spent 7 wonderful days exploring Malta with six days on the mainland on one day on the neighboring islands, so we know it’s possible to see both Gozo and Comino in one day.  However, if you use inefficient methods, you will wind up spending a lot of money and seeing very little of these beautiful islands.  So, in order to avoid wasting any money or time, here are our tips on the best way to see Gozo and Comino in one day!

The Best Way to Get to Gozo and Comino Islands

After thorough exploration, we discovered that taking an organized tour is the best approach for seeing Gozo and Comino in one day. These tours provide a seamless and hassle-free experience, handling transportation, and guiding you through the highlights of each island. This tour includes a ferry ride to each island and bus transportation between each of the sights on Gozo Island allowing you to maximize your time and focus on immersing yourself in the beauty and culture of Gozo and Comino.

We booked this tour through Viator for the low price of €35, and we can honestly say that it was worth every penny!  There’s no way that we could have seen so much, so quickly and affordably on our own.  So, if you want to discover the best of Gozo and Comino Islands then book this experience here!

What You Will See on this Gozo and Comino Boat Tour

This tour itinerary does change seasonally, so you may see different beaches or attractions on Gozo Island depending on the season.  In the summer, the tour will take you to Xlendi Bay which has a beautiful beach with shallow water for a relaxing swim.  Here, you can also take the stairs up the cliff to see a fantastic view of the entire bay.  This area is loaded with restaurants so it’s a great spot to get a bite to eat while you enjoy the beachy view.

Since we went in the winter, our tour took us to Dwejra Bay, where we enjoyed the impressive landscape and took a fun boat ride through the bay.

In Dwejra, you can marvel at the breathtaking coastal scenery, rugged cliffs, and majestic rock formations that make this area truly remarkable. A boat ride through the bay offers an extraordinary perspective of Gozo’s caves and grotto, making it a true highlight of your Malta day trip.

The boat ride is not included in your tour price but at the cost of €4 per person, it is a very affordable activity to do in Dwejra.

The Victoria Cittadella

Next, venture into the heart of Gozo and discover the historical gem known as the Victoria Cittadella. This ancient fortified city holds centuries of history within its walls. Explore its narrow winding streets, visit the impressive cathedral, and soak in the panoramic views of the island from the elevated city walls.  Walking the citadel walls was definitely our favorite part of visiting Gozo, so be sure not to miss it!

The only drawback of taking this tour is that we didn’t feel like we had enough time to see the walled city and have lunch.  To be honest, our time in the Cittadella was a bit rushed.  However, we recognize that this is a small sacrifice that you have to make in order to see a lot in a short amount of time.  I believe that if you take the tour knowing that you will only have time to walk the city walls and pick up some fast food takeout, then you will be prepared for the time constraints.

Comino’s Blue Lagoon

After finishing sightseeing on Gozo, you will get back on the boat to head to Comino Island.  Comino is famous for its mesmerizing Blue Lagoon.  With its crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning surroundings, the Blue Lagoon is a true paradise for nature lovers. Here, you can dive into the refreshing sea, snorkel among vibrant marine life, or simply unwind on the sun-drenched shores.

It was a bit too cold and windy to swim in the Blue Lagoon when we visited in February, but I imagine in the summer that this would be a beautiful paradise to behold.

In addition, to excellent views and swimming, this island has several hiking trails that will allow you to take in several unique but lovely vistas all around the island.

Is Gozo Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Gozo may be a small island, but it’s brimming with charm, idyllic landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage. From its unspoiled beaches to its ancient walled cities, Gozo offers a unique experience that is distinct from the mainland. So, go immerse yourself in its beauty and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Is Comino Worth Visiting?

In the winter, Comino is a gorgeous island to visit.  The crystal-clear blue water is stunning! But naturally, summer is the time when Comino really shines. Comino’s blue lagoon will take your breath away making Comino definitely worth a visit!

I love Malta! Visiting Gozo was a highlight during our trip to Malta – I loved the views from Victoria Cittadella. The tour to cover both Comino and Gozo sounds like a great option if you want to see both in 1 day – will do this next time!

This post has come at a good time. We are going to Malta in the Fall and plan to visit Gozo and Comino. I now have lots of detail to plan our visit. A boat tour will be a great way to see the islands from the water. But we will probably want to spend more time wandering on the land. And hopefully it will be nice enough for a dip in the Blue Lagoon!

I wish we had taken the time to visit Comino. We spent a day on Gozo during our visit to Malta, but Comino had some awesome places to explore as well. Guess we’ll have to go back.

Oooooo… now I want to visit Malta! And that tour looks interesting! I never would have thought to look for one! 👍🏼

Overall, do you feel like you had enough time to explore, or did you feel rushed?

To be honest, our stop in Victoria felt a little rushed, but it was a small con considering how much we were able to see.

Malta is on my list for exploration next year and I am so excited to visit! I hadn’t heard of Gozo and Comino but will definitely be adding them to our itinerary, thanks for the great recommendations!
